A Christmas Story: The Musical by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul
A Christmas Story: The Musical is a musical based on the famous Christmas movie by the same name. It takes place in 1940s Indiana, and stars Ralphie, a nine-year-old boy who wants nothing more than to get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. His wish is met with dismissal from the adults in his life, who repeatedly insist that he will "shoot his eye out." Meanwhile, Ralphie's parents struggle to host a harmonious Christmas, and face many comedic setbacks. In the end, Ralphie overcomes the neighborhood bully, receives his Red Ryder BB gun, and narrowly escapes shooting his eye out.
REHEARSALS begin Sunday, October 12th. Rehearsals are typically Sunday - Thursday, 6:30 - 9:30pm. Rehearsals may be called outside these days and times with sufficient notice.
TECHNICAL WEEK: November 30th - December 4th

Character Descriptions -- A Christmas Story: The Musical
Narrator
Jean Shepherd/Narrator: Male, late 40s to early 60s. A charismatic storyteller who has the ability to weave a spell and draw an audience into his magical world. He is omniscient but not overpowering -- a good-natured curmudgeon with a deadpan sense of humor. Has one singing line at the end of the show, non-dancing role.

The Family
Ralphie: Male, age 8-12. Cute and winsome, but not precious. Bright, but not precocious. A regular kid you wouldn't mind having as a next-door neighbor. A bit mischievous but with a twinkle in his eye. Minimal dancing. Vocal range is F#3 to D5.
The Old Man: Male, 30s to 40s. Ralphie's father. A guy with a good heart, though it is buried beneath a sometimes gruff exterior. He's a devoted husband and father who loves his family but doesn't overtly show it. A strong dancer. Vocal range is B♭2 to G4.
Mother: Female, age 30s to 40s. More in charge of the family than The Old Man is, but she would never let him know it. She is warm and affable, at times a bit daffy, but not a pushover. She is the secret engine that keeps the household together with an impressive balancing act. A strong dancer. Vocal range is G3 to D♭5.
Randy: Male, age 6-10. Ralphie's younger brother. Cute, cuddly, and whiny. Admires Ralphie but won't admit it. A strong dancer. Vocal range is F#3 to D5.

Featured Adults
Miss Shields: Female, age 30s to 50s. The local elementary school teacher. A seemingly stereotypical 1940s educator -- prim and proper. In Ralphie's fantasy, she becomes a dynamic, show-stopping belter and a tapper -- a force to be reckoned with. Tap dancer. Vocal range is F#3 to D5.
Santa: Male, age 30s to 60s. The Santa Claus at Higbee's department store is decidedly unlike the typical "Jolly Old Elf" of legend. Ill-tempered and slightly inebriated, he is unhappy with his job and dismisses each child as quickly as possible. Vocal range is B♭2 to F4.

The Kids
Flick: Male, age 8-12. A classmate of Ralphie's. Must be able to sustain a lisp.
Schwartz: Male, age 8-12. A classmate of Ralphie's.
Esther Jane: Female, age 8-12. A classmate of Ralphie's.
Mary Beth: Female, age 8-12. A classmate of Ralphie's.
Nancy: Female, age 8-12. A classmate of Ralphie's.
Scut Farkus: Male, age 13-17. The textbook example of a schoolyard bully, except that he doesn't go to school. He is loud, obnoxious, and intimidating. Older than Ralphie and his classmates by a year or two. He always appears at the most inopportune times to scare and harass his innocent victims.
Grover Dill: Male, age 8-12. Always at Farkus' side is his sidekick, Dill. Much younger and decidedly smaller than Farkus, Dill delights in being tethered to his "hero."
Kids' Ensemble: 4-8 children, ages 8-17.
