How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying is a rousing musical, winner of a Tony award and a Pulitzer Prize. The story follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook titled How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying to climb the corporate ladder from a lowly window washer to a high-powered executive.
There are 10 roles plus an ensemble.
The audition will include cold readings from the script, vocals, and dance.
Ensemble females may be asked to tap dance.
You may prepare a 16-bar vocal selection. An accompanist will be available. You may bring recorded background music without vocals or sing acapella. Vocal selections should be based on the style of the musical but not in this musical.
Character Descriptions
J. Pierrepont Finch (Male Presenting, age 18-25, Vocal Range: Top G4 Bottom C3)protagonist, an irrepressible, clear-eyed, almost puckish hero.
Gatch (Male Presenting, age 40-60) a sleazy executive with a penchant for the ladies.
Smitty (Female Presenting, age 30-40) a secretary with a dry sense of humor. she is a cynical, working woman who is on the lookout for a man.
Mr Twimble (Male Presenting, age 60-75, Vocal Range: Top E4 Bottom C#3) a fussy, old-fashioned, yet loyal employee at the company. Supervisor of the mailroom who believes his success is due to his lack of ambition and ability to remain unnoticed.
J.B. Biggley (Male Presenting, age 50-65, Vocal Range: Top A4 Bottom C3) the stuffed-shirt, philandering President of World Wide Wicket. Beneath his ruthless exterior, he is a college lad at heart.
Bud Frump (Male Presenting, age 18-21, Vocal Range: Top F4 Bottom C3) Biggley's nephew and scheming employee. He is an arrogant sycophant, who tries to advance his career by exploiting his family connections.
Wally Womper (Male Presenting, age 55-70, Vocal Range: Top E4 Bottom D3) The company's Chief Executive and a former window washer.
Rosemary (Female Presenting, age 20-30, Vocal Range: Top B4 Bottom A3 a secretary at the company who is more interested in finding a man than advancing her career. She becomes Finch's love interest.
Miss Jones (Female Presenting, age 55-65, Vocal Range: Top Gb5 Bottom Bb3) J.B.'s stuffy secretary who is abrupt and tough, but soft and kind to those who are good to her.
Hedy (Female Presenting, age 25-35, Vocal Range: Top Eb5 Bottom C4) a voluptuous, sexually charged woman adored by all the men. She may appear dim-witted, but she really can manipulate men to get what she wants.
