Part detective story, part rom-com and part scientific fantasy, Tom Stoppard’s "Arcadia" frequently tops the list of greatest plays of the twentieth century.
At the centre of this play about fate, mathematics, feminism, gardening, apples and the utter randomness of it all is the story of a group of people who simply can't get it together when it comes to things that are actually important.
It is 1809 and thirteen-year-old Thomasina Coverly is a precocious mathematical genius, making sense of the world around her: her mother is obsessed with gardening, her tutor is having it off with the wife of a houseguest and the famous Lord Byron is skulking the corridors causing mischief.

As battle lines are drawn across the school table, a demand for satisfaction has terrible consequences.
Meanwhile in the present day, writer Hannah Jarvis navigates descendants of the Coverly clan, a jumped up academic, and time itself to investigate Thomasina’s discoveries, the mysterious events that happened 200 years ago and exactly who the shadowy figure of death is that haunts the garden at Sidley Park…

ROLES AVAILABLE: (stage ages in brackets)

THOMASINA COVERLY (16ish) Daughter of the house and a mathematical genius. Precocious, intelligent, naïve.

SEPTIMUS HODGE (20-30) The Coverly’s genius tutor. Witty, brooding.

JELLABY (Middle-aged) Butler at Sidley Park. Knows all. Nosy, reserved, passive (aggressive).

EZRA CHATER (25-35) A guest in the house and a second-rate romantic poet. Histrionic.

LADY CROOM (30-40) Lady of the house and the one in charge at Sidley Park. Witty, flirtatious, immoveable.

RICHARD NOAKES (30-50) Hired by Lady Croom to redesign the garden. Nervous, resigned.

CAPTAIN BRICE (30s) Lady Croom’s brother, a naval officer and an undercover rake.

HANNAH JARVIS (35-40) A writer/academic, currently researching the house and the people in it. Introverted, blunt, no-nonsense.

BERNARD NIGHTINGALE (late 30s) A University Don with an axe to grind. Arrogant, dramatic, excitable.

VALENTINE COVERLY (25-30) A Postgraduate Mathematics student. In love with Hannah. Quiet, awkward, passionate.

CHLOE COVERLY (18-20) The middle Coverly child. Perceptive, intelligent, quick.

AUGUSTUS COVERLY/GUS COVERLY (15) The same actor plays both roles. Augustus is Thomasina’s obnoxious older brother, and Gus is the youngest of the modern Coverlys, selectively mute.
