About the Play:
This iconic piece is a series of interconnected poems and stories told by seven women, each identified by a color of the rainbow. They share their joys, heartbreaks, triumphs, and struggles as Black women in America, creating a moving and unforgettable exploration of sisterhood, love, abuse, and resilience.

Location: Rudisill Public Library (1520 N. Hartford, Tulsa, 74106)
What to Prepare:
Please prepare a short, one-to-two-minute monologue from a published play, keeping in mind the poetry and movement of this play. We are especially interested in monologues that showcase strong emotional range and character depth. Auditions may also include cold readings from the script.
Who We are Looking For:
We are seeking Black and Afro-Latina women to portray the following characters:
Lady in Red, the dominant character in this work (she has the largest number of lines). She recites the most violent and emotionally moving poems in the drama, including those that demonstrate the brutality and anguish endured and experienced by African American women.
Lady in Orange, a poet and a dancer. With a feminist outlook, she expresses a love of the arts of poetry, song, and dance expounding on a primary theme in the drama, the misunderstanding of women and failures of communication between men and women.
Lady in Yellow, who represents youth and liveliness. She recites “graduation night,” a selection about a fun night of dancing, parties, and lost virginity, and the unfortunate dependence of women on sources outside themselves for love.
Lady in Green, called Sechita, a dancer in a poem that is strong with images of Egyptian royalty and mixed with references to New Orleans “conjurin.” Sechita has performed in many places and has taken her mystical and magical aura along with her sometimes tattered appearance.
Lady in Purple, who expresses the need for mutual support and understanding among women. She begs her lover to allow her to love him, furthering the theme of unrequited love found throughout the drama.
Lady in Blue, portrays an isolated character trapped by a six-block section of Harlem, her universe, thus demonstrating the tragedy of a woman without supportive female companions.
Lady in Brown, dressed in a neutral color not of the rainbow. She deals with the earthly matters of the world that her color denotes about the pain and misunderstanding that often accompany the youth of black women, as well as denoting the pride that comes from learning about the contributions of black people throughout history.
All roles require strong acting skills and a comfort with movement, as the play incorporates dance and stylized choreography. We encourage actors of all ages, body types, and experience levels to audition.
What to bring:
Your headshot and resume, if you have one. Auditions will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis as time allows.
We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive rehearsal environment where everyone feels safe and respected. If you have any questions or accessibility needs, please contact Kelli at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you there!
