About this Event

Abstract

Research on monuments and historic cities has increased notably in recent years; however, the dissemination of results does not usually go beyond the strictly academic sphere. Nevertheless, it is necessary to transfer this knowledge to the society that, ultimately, is the main owner. Traditional methods to reach this public, such as informative publications or posters, are still effective, but they must be linked to information and communication technologies. Today, they are essential to reach a much broader public, local and external, and especially the younger generations. We have been working along these lines in recent years at the University of Córdoba, with the aim of returning accumulated scientific knowledge to society. This dissemination is especially focused on digital, audiovisual and online media: augmented reality with three-dimensional reconstructions, micro-documentaries using drones or, for example, 360-degree photographic tours with specific information added. These works have been carried out on the general urban layout of ancient and medieval Córdoba or on specific monuments, such as the tower-minaret of San Juan. Through them we are using Córdoba, a UNESCO World Heritage City, as a laboratory for these technologies whose experience could be extended to other historic cities.

Biography

Rafael Blanco has a degree in Art History and a PhD in Archeology and Heritage. Since 2017 he is a professor at the Department of Art History at the University of Cordoba. He is a specialist in Islamic heritage, fundamentally in the urban planning and architecture of Córdoba, in which he has been collaborating, coordinating and leading several projects, conferences and publications on Roman and Islamic Córdoba during the last fifteen years. He has also carried out various scientific dissemination projects financed and / or awarded by the main Spanish and European institutions. These projects have focused on the use of information and communication technologies to connect heritage and people, which have reached a wide scope and have been developed within the framework of different national and international research projects.
