Audio drama writing- Summer Stories residency

Take part in our Summer Stories audio drama residency - write and develop an audio drama, from idea to script to recording, with award winning audio producer Jay Sykes.

Over a residency of four workshops, you'll produce a new audio drama inspired by the stories of Sunderland's parish church. Together, we'll explore and experiment with scriptwriting, sound design, and aspects of performance and directing, all combining to create an original audio drama which you can be proud of. Our finished audio drama will form one of the gems in our listening party later in the summer.

Session 1 - Basics of Audio Drama - Saturday 3rd June 2023 - 10am-2pm

• Learning about what makes audio drama distinctive as a medium.

• Key building blocks of dramatic storytelling.

• Listening to and discussing audio drama examples together.

• Introductory short writing activities scattered throughout.

• Penning short first drafts of our ideas.

Session 2 - Script Draft Workshop - Sunday 4th June 2023 - 10am-2pm

• We'll read your first drafts, and workshop them together - developing those first drafts into longer scripts.

• Discussions around building up character profiles, story arcs, strengthening up our stories, and sound worldbuilding.

• We'll begin to consider casting our characters, and collecting sound design / music.

Session 3 - Recording & Performing Workshop - Saturday 17th June 2023 - 10am-2pm

• Jay will return to you your 'finished' scripts, polished and edited up for time & quality control.

• Learn aspects of how to record with industry-standard audio kit.

• Consider how to direct actors in an audio drama setting, using aspiring local performers and/or willing participants.

• First day of recording our dramas

Session 4 - Recording & Performing Workshop 2 - Sunday 18th June 2023 - 10am-2pm

• A second session devoted to working with performances and recordings.

• We will also spend time recording incidental noises, background characters, and 'foley' sounds.

Listening Party - Recording & Performing Workshop 2 - Saturday 8th July 2023

An open listening party will be hosted at Seventeen Nineteen on Saturday 8th July, to share your work and celebrate the stories you've made. Join us and celebrate all your hard work and your ideas.

These workshops will be held predominantly on the ground floor and will be wheelchair accessible

These workshops are open to writers and community storytellers, no experience of writing or audio production is necessary

These workshops are only suitable for those aged 16+
