Program Description

Barbara Held and Richard Garet – Nine Movements (2024) A durational audiovisual work structured in nine interrelated sections, developed through an open and iterative collaborative process. Flute, analog synthesis, and field recordings interact with moving image processes that explore luminosity, signal behavior, and temporal transformation. Sound and image unfold in reciprocal exchange, forming a continuously shifting perceptual environment.

Gustavo Matamoros – Tone Poem in Surround (2025) A work for amplified text, small piano sounds, and radio speech presented in surround sound. Combining live writing, intimate physical gestures, and shortwave transmissions, the piece unfolds as a sequence of brief sonic events — “audibles” — defined by texture, action, and spatial presence. Speech, memory, and interference intersect within a layered acoustic field.

About the Participating Artists

Gustavo Matamoros is a Miami-based intermedia artist, composer, and curator working in experimental music, sound installation, and interdisciplinary performance. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, he has been active in South Florida since 1979 and is the founding artistic director of the Subtropics Festival. His work explores listening as a spatial and perceptual practice through immersive and site-responsive environments. He is currently in residence at Florida International University’s i360 XR Theater and at Deering Estate Theater, supported by a Knight Arts Challenge award.

Barbara Held is a Barcelona-based flutist and composer whose work focuses on the physical and spatial qualities of sound, integrating acoustic performance with electronic processing and installation.

Richard Garet is an intermedia artist working across sound, moving image, and installation. His practice engages signal, perception, and material transformation through hybrid analog and digital processes.
