Artist Bio
The Atlantic Septet is comprised of recent graduates from The Juilliard School (Katya Moeller, violin; Sydney Whipple, viola; Reina Cho, cello; Joe Weinberg, bass; Anju Aoto, clarinet; Bobby Thompson, bassoon; Brooks Wisniewski, horn) who share a passion for chamber music performance and a desire to engage with community.
The septet is in London as orchestra members playing at the BBC Proms on August 10th alongside students of the Royal Academy of Music. The Atlantic Septet is remaining in London and playing two additional chamber concerts, one at St Giles’ Oxford on August 12th and one at St James’s Piccadilly on August 14th. Having received a grant from The Juilliard School, the septet’s focus is to bring chamber music, the ultimate and most connective form of music making, to new and welcoming audiences. The goal is to have a dialogue with new public audiences, in a country where many of us are playing for the first time and to make classical music more accessible for all who wish to hear.
In playing Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major, one of the last works he composed before his severe descent into deafness, we hear playful and sincere conversations among different instruments, painting an elegant and energetic picture in his own style. We do however hear the prominence of classical style, as the work was influenced by the serenade and divertimento traditions of Mozart and Haydn. One can’t help but be attracted to the darkness and ethereal contrast in this work, his wit and profound sense of structure, all coming together to create a grand odyssey for the listeners and indeed the players.
