ATL Living Lab: Buford Highway

We are back with our second ATL Living Lab: Buford Highway, a celebration and collaborative design session for the Doraville, Chamblee and Norcross communities that will tackle the cost of living crisis through storytelling and connection.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, join us at the beautiful Gwinnett County Library, Norcross Branch, that will feature interactive exhibits, expert panels, community building activities, food and fellowship made possible by Canopy Atlanta and the Atlanta Civic Circle. The topic of the day will be tenant rights. An Emory University group recently conducted a housing affordability study analyzing a10-mile stretch of land north of I-85 and just south of Buford Highway. That study found that there is a major shortage of affordable housing for residents that earn less than $17,500 a year. For every 100 residents in that category, there are only four apartments that are affordable, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s criteria.

The ATL Living Labs event series is an extension of Cost of Living, a reporting project launched in 2023 that trains community journalists and produces in-depth enterprise reporting on the cost of living. This investigative reporting and community storytelling project sheds light on a number of challenges facing metro Atlantans. Inspired by the reporting and community listening of hundreds of residents living along major Atlanta corridors--Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, Buford Highway, Memorial Drive and Campbellton Road-- the ATL Living Labs explore the Cost of Living stories from each area and delve into exclusive insights from writers and subject matter experts.

Our first ATL Living Lab: Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway was a great success. We look forward to introducing this event series in Buford Highway and addressing the affordability challenges in this community.
