About this Event
The Mediterranean Sea has been central to Western civilisation, depicted in classical literature as a sea of great possibilities—from ancient maritime myths to significant historical events. Throughout its history, the Mediterranean’s westernmost point, the Strait of Gibraltar, has been a crucial focal point, shaped by tides, migrations, and ongoing convergences. Our symposium aims to position the Western Mediterranean within the broader contexts of the Mediterranean region, the Atlantic, and North Africa. We will explore its historical, cultural, biological, geographical, and legal dimensions, offering a thematic approach to key topics including (but not limited to) Colonial History, Language, Nature Conservation, Ornithology, Law, and Food Culture; all of which connect the Western Mediterranean to the wider region and beyond.
