What does it mean to call a Goddess by name?
Throughout the ancient world, divine names carried significance beyond simple identification. Names, titles, and epithets could speak to a deity's nature, relationships, powers, and presence. In surviving magical and devotional texts, we encounter practitioners calling upon the Divine through elaborate invocations, sacred names, and words understood to carry particular meaning and authority.
But what is the difference between knowing a divine name and knowing the Goddess herself?
This October, At the Crossroads — Hekate Devotional & Mystery Study continues our Ancient Voices journey as we return to the Greek Magical Papyri (PGM) and explore the relationship between sacred speech, invocation, divine identity, and magical authority.
Last month, we began with Prayer Before Power, examining how ancient practitioners approached Hekate through recognition, praise, invocation, and petition. We also confronted the uncomfortable reality that ancient magical practices were not always guided by intentions we would consider ethical today.
That work opened an important conversation about the difference between studying historical practices and choosing what belongs in our own devotional relationships.
This month, we're taking that conversation further.
When we speak the names of Hekate, what are we actually doing?
Are we calling upon a particular aspect of the Goddess? Recognizing something of her nature? Establishing a relationship through sacred speech? Or are we attempting to exercise authority through the act of naming?
We'll examine how divine names and invocations appear within the Greek Magical Papyri, considering the historical and religious environments in which these texts developed and the ways different divine identities were brought together.
We'll also explore the difference between invocation and command, and what responsibility looks like when we bring sacred language into our own modern practice.
As always, our gathering will move beyond historical study. Through discussion, journaling, and practical devotional work, we'll consider how the names we use reflect the relationships we're building and whether the words we speak genuinely express the reverence we intend.
Because knowing a name is not necessarily the same as knowing the Goddess.
And speaking an invocation is not the same as building a relationship.
Before there was power, there was reverence. Before there was a request, there was relationship.
What to Expect
Our gathering includes historical teaching, devotional exploration, group discussion, guided journaling, and practical ritual work.
We maintain our established practice of lighting our ritual torches, invoking Hekate, and closing our work together.
This is not a spell-of-the-month class, nor are we attempting to reproduce ancient magical operations without context. We are studying the surviving voices of ancient practitioners while developing our own understanding, discernment, and devotional relationships.
Both beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome. Previous attendance is not required.
