Así Se Goza! SON Edition: Sunday, October 4th
Welcome to Así Se Goza: SON Edition, the latest edition of this event that brings dancers together from all over the country to talk nerdy and dive DEEP into Cuban dance and music so that you can connect to your partner, to yourself, and to the music and level up your social dancing game! After our past two editions of Así Se Goza (ASG) focused on timba and casino, we decided it was time to explore the elegance and connection of Cuban Son. We gathered some of the best teachers, most beautiful dancers, and sharpest minds around to organize a full day of workshops in every aspect of son that you can imagine, to make sure that YOU--and everyone else--come away learning new skills and having fun.
For ASG, we place an emphasis on a few things that distinguish the event from many other festivals:
(a) instead of a buffet-style approach, where you might take one class in rumba, then another on Chango, and dance mambo after that, we want ASG to focus on a SINGLE theme--in this case, Cuban son--to allow everyone to really dive deeply into it.
(b) the day's schedule is designed with real thought and intention then to be a journey, to have a throughline from morning to afternoon that makes sense and will leave you with a deeper level of understanding.
(c) we intentionally try to keep the teacher-student ratio low--rather than being one in a room of 200 people without being able to see, we work to have enough instructors to offer individualized, one-on-one feedback throughout the sessions.
(d) this year, because we know there's a range of experience with son, we'll be offering two sessions each hour, one intended for beginner-improver dancers and one for the intermediate-level veterans out there.
As you know, Cuban son is a rich dance with lots of varieties and elements in its own right, so we're excited to use the day to teach you all different aspects of the dance--from guajira to guaracha, son oriental to son montuno, desplazamientos to tornillos, and much more.
Once again this year, ASG will be preceded the day before, on Saturday, October 3rd, by Rueday, our ode to rueda de casino in all its forms. If you want to join both days and save some money in the process, you can buy a combo pass that gets you into both Rueday and ASG; if, however, your schedule or your interests tilt toward just one event, we've got passes for each event on its own as well.
