ask me to remember: an archiving workshop series

What does it mean to hold memory?

“ask me to remember” is a collaborative learning series, by Lede New Orleans in partnership with Preservation Hall Foundation, that invites participants to explore memory work, community archiving, and the preservation of stories and cultural legacies. In this opening session*, we’ll come together to reflect on the people and traditions that carried memory forward before us, and begin building tools to document and preserve our own histories.

Through guided conversation, we’ll explore questions like:

• Who served as the “memory keeper” in your family or community?
• What senses, objects, or traditions carried stories across generations?
• How do everyday items—photos, recordings, recipes, letters—become archives of resilience?

Together, we’ll discuss the importance of memory and cultural preservation, particularly within communities shaped by colonial and capitalist systems that often attempt to erase or undervalue these histories.
