Implementing Energy Efficiency Projects: From Concept to Contractor, Energy Efficiency Survey and HVAC System Testing

This course will present several options that are available to help you survey and assess your current situation and to develop a plan for implementing energy efficiency projects. These activities represent different ways to assess a project, from the simple and high-level to more complex and detailed studies. These options also can be implemented to help you weigh your choices, determine an appropriate, economically viable direction to take, and after implementation, measure the savings.

Additionally we will cover practical information on how to conduct an energy use survey with the goal of discovering ways to save energy with lighting, motors, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Materials include a comprehensive survey form and tools for gathering data, savings calculation worksheets, and information on baseline energy use comparisons with other buildings.

Today’s technology has made available many portable forms of instrumentation that can be used to evaluate air-conditioning refrigeration systems. System testing, sometimes known as commissioning, refers to getting the data you need to determine whether systems are functioning correctly. We will cover the relevant issues and available methods for field testing HVAC systems, and the use of specific instruments

About the Instructors:

David Wylie, PE, MBA

David Wylie (the “W” of ASW Engineering) has a wide range of energy engineering experience, including research, development, program design, measurement, feasibility study of electrical and mechanical systems, and energy supply for commercial and industrial facilities. He has a college teaching credential, teaches what he knows from experience, and has developed more than 20 courses that address energy-efficient systems. David takes sophisticated engineering concepts and relates them in a way you can understand in a friendly and practical way.
Several of David’s articles have been published in trade magazines, and he has written a book titled “New Refrigerants for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems.” ASW Engineering has received awards for innovations in engineering from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Southern California Edison, and California’s governor.

Les Taniyama, PE

Leslie (Les) Taniyama heads up PSIG-HI (Power and Systems Inspection Group), a consultation and engineering firm which provides various technical services in Hawaii and other western United States. As an associate of PSIG-CA (California) DH Parr & Associates (Washington), Les’ disciplines include mechanical, electrical and energy engineering with work concentrations in HVAC design, facility consultation and forensic engineering.

After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Hawaii, Les spent time as a contractor, manufacturer representative of HVAC equipment and now, as a consultant for facility managers/owners and engineering design/consultant for design engineering firms.

Les provides for energy auditing, monitoring, data analysis, design and commissioning part, of what has been developed as, the “Performance Design” process. The performance design also provides for his post participation in the design that allows for fine tuning of the system and operator training.

We will send participants a map and instructions on how to get to the training room prior to the class. Registration will close when we reach room capacity. If you cannot attend after registering kindly email [email protected] and [email protected] so that we can offer the space to another person. Mahalo.
