Julie Becton Gillum, artistic Director of the Asheville Butoh Festival, will perform “Dusk.” Ancient walls, built by human hands that meticulously selected and placed each stone, become sacred after being touched with reverence throughout countless centuries. Prayers, spanning over immeasurable time, have been softly whispered and imprinted into the wall’s crevices. Over time, their very essence seeps out, bursting forth like projectiles – whether in the form of arrows, stones, or bullets. The wall has become a canvas, bearing witness to the firing squad’s executions, the warm blood and tissue splattered against its surface. The DNA absorbed into the wall has since become the very foundation of stories, myths, and legends.
Scoop Slone will present “To Quarry: Glacial Third Hives,” accompanied by a live experimental sound score by Jorge Sanders with costume is by fashion designer Marco Oldhafer. The work draws inspiration from conversations among the trio about personhood and process, as well as from the 1967 Verb List of sculptor Richard Serra. Serra’s massive steel works are influenced by modern dance, with structures that emulate ships slowly undocking from harbors and also invite the viewer to engage through circular, curved, and stretched spiral movements.
