TOPIC:

Historic mass masonry forts in the southeast region of the United States of America and the Caribbean experience significant wind forces during hurricanes. These structures, consisting of stone or brick masonry, were generally designed using empirical methods common at the time of construction rather than engineering mechanics for minimum design loads. This presentation will discuss a study on the preliminary evaluation of two representative historic mass masonry forts for hurricane loading. The purpose of the study was to evaluate elements of the forts for current day and future hurricanes, using present-day design wind pressures, including the current wind speed parameters, which are derived from updated hurricane simulation models. This information provided the National Park Service with an understanding of potential vulnerabilities that can be incorporated into additional studies and future preservation.

Heba Elsayed is a Senior Associate and forensic structural engineer with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University, and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Since joining WJE in 2017, she has participated in a variety of structural investigations, analysis, repair designs, and historic preservation projects. Her experience includes repair and rehabilitation of historic masonry and stone structures, as well as historic wood roof trusses.
