Lessons Learned: Rural Alaskan Wastewater Failures in Anderson, AK
Abstract:
The City of Anderson is a small rural Alaskan community north of Denali National Park. In 2014, the City completed construction of a new wastewater collection system, complete with sewage lagoon, insulated mains, services, and lift station. Immediately, the system had problems with freezing, which required system changes. In 2021, the shallow water table rose significantly during the winter. Since then, the collection system has been inundated with over 100,000 GPD of groundwater infiltration during the winter months. In February 2023, the issues worsened as the sewage lagoon overtopped and the system froze. Emergency declarations were issued by the City, Borough, and State. Since 2023, Kuna Engineering has been working with Village Safe Water and the community to quantify the problem, identify the issues, and provide recommendations. The project is currently in design, with construction anticipated for late 2026. This presentation will review lessons learned that have wide application for rural wastewater systems in Alaska.

Presenter:
Daniel Nichols is the Director of Civil Engineering at Kuna Engineering. He has over 20 years of experience as a professional engineer in Alaska. Daniel specializes in rural Alaska development and cold regions engineering. He has worked in more than 175 communities throughout Alaska. Daniel is also the ASCE’s Alaska Section president and an APDC board member. Daniel and his wife, Rebecca, have six kids. He enjoys fishing, hiking, and spending time in Alaska’s outdoors.
