Course Description: This course provides training on the design and performance of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls under static and seismic loading. The course introduces the latest FHWA Manual GEC 11 - Design and Construction of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls, explores geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutments, and discusses seismic aspects of MSE walls during earthquake.

Instructors’ Qualifications:

Dr. Richard Bathurst is currently Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the Royal Military College of Canada. He is a past-President of several international organizations including International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). Dr. Bathurst has authored or co-authored 230 journal papers and more than 250 other contributions. Dr. Bathurst’s current research activities are focused on the use and reliability-based design of geosynthetic and metallic reinforcement in earth retaining wall systems. Dr. Bathurst was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2017. The “Bathurst Lecture” was established by the IGS in 2021 in recognition of his lifetime contributions to the development of geosynthetic soil reinforcement technologies and the mission of the IGS. Dr. Bathurst is the 2024-2025 ASCE Geo-Institute (G-I) Cross-US Lecturer. He was awarded the 2024 Julian C. Smith Medal of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) "For achievement in the development of Canada".

Dr. Jie Han is a Bob Wong Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii and a Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor at the University of Kansas. He is the immediate past president of the ASCE G-I and has gained extensive academic and industrial experiences in geosynthetics research and applications. He is the sole author of the textbook entitled “Principles and Practice in Ground Improvement” and has published nearly 500 technical papers. Dr. Han received the 2014 IGS Award, the 2017 ASCE Martin S. Kapp Foundation Engineering Award, and the 2022-2023 Robert M. Koerner Lecture Award.
