About this Event
The Sinai Temple Mental Health Center invites you to a private screening of the award-winning film: As Seen Through These Eyes. It is extraordinary movie that highlights Holocaust survivors who use art as a means to approach all that they witnessed and experienced. They fought Hitler with the only weapons they had: charcoal, pencil stubs, shreds of paper and memories etched in their minds. Writer, director, and producer Hilary Helstein has brought together artwork, archival footage and interviews with survivor artists including the late Simon Wiesenthal for a gripping documentary that makes a compelling statement about the human spirit, enduring against unimaginable odds.
The film is narrated by renowned poet, Maya Angelou, and it has garnered eight international awards to date. Colorful artwork created on the walls of the barracks with coal and pieces of colored pencils helped those living within to endure. We will also have an exhibit which offers a rare opportunity to view the art of Samuel Bak, Alfred Kantor, Dina Gottliebova Babbitt, Ela Weissberger and Karl Stojka. The movie screening will be followed by a Q&A with producer Hilary Helstein.
