Arturo Sandoval was born on November 6, 1949, in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana. His musical journey began in his early years, inspired by the groundbreaking jazz master, Dizzy Gillespie. Sandoval’s exposure to Gillespie’s revolutionary fusion of Latin influences with American jazz would profoundly shape his musical development and artistic vision.
Sandoval’s talent and dedication propelled him to become one of the most celebrated and influential jazz trumpeters of our time. Starting with classical trumpet studies at the age of twelve, he quickly embraced the allure of jazz, captivating audiences with his virtuosity, technical brilliance, and an unparalleled ability to soar into stratospheric high notes. Sandoval’s command over the trumpet and flügelhorn, along with his impressive range, dexterity, and expressive playing style, have established him as a true master of his craft!
Arturo Sandoval’s extraordinary contributions to jazz have earned him international acclaim and an impressive collection of accolades. He has been honored with an astonishing 10 GRAMMY® Awards along with 19 GRAMMY® Award Nominations! Sandoval’s ability to effortlessly traverse genres and styles, showcasing his mastery of Latin jazz, bebop, and beyond, has garnered him widespread recognition as a versatile and trailblazing musician. Sandoval is also a Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient, an Emmy Award-Winner, a 6x-Billboard Music Award-Winner, a 2015 Hispanic Heritage Award Recipient, and an Honorary Doctorate recipient in Fine Arts from The University of Notre Dame.

His evocative and captivating compositions have enriched numerous movies, including “1001 to 1,” “At Middleton,” “Havana,” “Random Hearts,” “The Perez Family,” and “61,” among others. His GRAMMY® Award Nominated piece, “Mambo Caliente,” showcased in the “Mambo Kings” soundtrack, illustrates his ability to infuse cinematic narratives with his signature Latin rhythms and melodic beauty.
Arturo Sandoval was a founding member of the GRAMMY® Award-Winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of Jazz, Classical, Rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world and continues to do so today.
Arturo Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys amongst many others. He has performed with John Williams with the Boston Pops, and in the Super bowl with Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle!
