Arts Datathon 2024: Discovery - Presented by LA Department of Arts and Culture

Arts Datathon, an annual gathering of creative minds and data enthusiasts, is set to return for its seventh edition on Tuesday, May 7th, 2024, at Inner-City Arts in Downtown Los Angeles. Organized by the LA Department of Arts and Culture, this year's event promises a day of data exploration, collaboration, and innovation, focusing on the theme of "Discovery." The theme of "discovery" encourages participants to focus on process rather than product, and on learning new ways of engaging with data.

Arts Datathon 2024: Discovery will run from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm and is FREE for all participants with Eventbrite registration. Morning coffee and lunch will be provided.

This year’s Datathon will feature four unique workshops for participants to explore the intersection of art and data:

  • Anyone Can Map! A Civic Art Mapathon: Learn how to map cultural landmarks and public artwork on Google Maps and OpenStreetMap using LA County’s Civic Art collection.
  • Artful Narratives: Learning StoryMapping With Public Art Data: Utilize ArcGIS StoryMaps, an easy-to-use online application to craft a compelling, interactive narrative inspired by data about public art.
  • Teach Yourself Data Analysis with AI: Harness the power of generative AI to unlock new insights and gain perspectives from the data you already have on hand.
  • The Labor of Looking: Collaboratively build an analog dataset using images from magazines, newspapers, and photobooks to answer survey questions around artistic labor, funding, and other topics, while exploring the issues inherent to data collection and image literacy.

Since its inception in 2017, Arts Datathon has been a catalyst for collaboration, bringing together a diverse array of participants including arts administrators, artists, educators, data scientists, students, community advocates, researchers, civic technologists, members of the tech community, and others. The event aims to explore how data can be leveraged to improve access to the arts and enhance cultural experiences for all.

"Our goal with [Arts Datathon 2024: Discovery] is to demystify data for the arts community and gain new insights that can enhance access to arts and culture across the Los Angeles region” said Bronwyn Mauldin, Director of Research and Evaluation at the LA Department of Arts and Culture. “Inner-City Arts is a perfect venue for Arts Datathon 2024: Discovery, ensuring that the transformative power of creativity and data is accessible to all members of our community.”

Arts Datathon: Discovery is presented by the LA County Department of Arts and Culturewith generous support from Arts for LA, The Huntington, LA Metro, Los Angeles Artist Census, Maptime LA, and The Music Center.

This year’s event is produced by POIETO, a woman-owned and BIPOC-led company dedicated to building collective intelligence for a more creative and responsible AI future.
