ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

In this workshop participants are invited to join illustrator and artist Yael De Gale for a cultural banner-making session. Artforms that will be highlighted include illustration/drawing, painting, crafting, and mindfulness. Completed banners can be hung up at home, in one’s room, or in a special place. Growing up, Yael noticed banners hung up in either the kitchen, living room, or in a sacred space of many Caribbean cultural homes. These banners illustrated a brief cultural history of a family’s home country, including festivities, foods, and other symbols of celebration. The banners created in this ArtMEETS workshop are fabric based (canvas that will be pre-painted black as the background), and Yael will encourage participants to draw, paint, or create what matters to them culturally on their banners! Yael is a drawing instructor at Max the Mutt College, and loves to show people how to break past their fears of drawing. Join us for a fun afternoon where you will draw inspiration from your unique heritage, while infusing your dreams, goals, and aspirations for the future onto your banner!

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Yael De Gale is an artisan specializing in illustration. With roots in Grenadian and Jamaican heritage, he grew up in the vibrant community of Scarborough. His design language is deeply influenced by storytelling, drawing inspiration from my Afro-Caribbean culture, music, history, and animation. He is passionate about discovering innovative ways to cultivate creative culture.

Throughout his creative journey, he has actively participated in community initiatives, facilitated arts-based programs, and contributed to grassroots projects. These experiences have enriched his skills and deepened his commitment to community engagement.

Beyond his artistic expertise, communication has played a vital role in connecting with diverse communities across the Greater Toronto Area. Through public speaking, event hosting, and engaging with youth and newcomers, he has built strong, positive, and enduring relationships.
