We hereby cordially invite you to attend the symposium organised by the Vrije Universiteit on 22 October (see invitation below). They have spent the past year and a half researching how SPACE's Storytelling Circles methodology can contribute to dialogue and understanding in a polarised context. Researcher Timo Korstenbroek will share his initial findings and Petra Ardai from SPACE will explain how a Storytelling Circle works. Afterwards, we hope for a lively conversation between scientists, artists and anyone else interested in the power of imagination. Please let us know if you are coming! The SPACE team

22 October from 15:30 - 18:00 at VU Amsterdam (Main building, Floor 2, room 36A)

What role do stories have in our lives? What stories do we tell about ourselves and others? And how might we go about changing these stories, so that they can serve as pathways towards the creation of common grounds?
During this symposium, both artists and researchers will discuss these questions with regard to a research project called Common Ground Dialogues. This project is funded by Creative Europe and consists of a collaboration between artists (performance artists, poets, writers, visual artists) throughout Europe (France, Slovakia, Hungary and the Netherlands), and researchers from VU's department of Sociology. The aim of the project is to research and further develop the particular artistic storytelling methodology as created by SPACE, an art initiative from Amsterdam, to see how it might serve as a tool to construct common grounds across differences within polarized contexts.
In this meeting, Timo Korstenbroek will present the early findings of the research, while theatre maker Petra Ardai (SPACE) will tell and show more about the storytelling methodology she created. Afterwards, we would like to engage in conversations about the notion of (or need for) creating common grounds to 'depolarize' and the role of artistic practices in doing so, our own experiences with these topics, and more in general, the ways in which artistic practices and research can reinforce each other in addressing social issues. And of course, there will also be some time reserved for drinks and snacks.
The symposium is organized by the Vrije Universiteit's FSS Co-creation for Inclusive Knowledges Lab in collaboration with SPACE Explorers. Among other things, the Co-creation Lab focuses on the role of arts-based practices and methodologies in research. If you want to be included in our mailing list to receive invitations for future events, please let us know by mailing to [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you at this event!
Best regards,
Elena Ponzoni, Lise Woensdregt and Timo Korstenbroek
