About this Event
On Wednesday, January 28th from 5-7PM, join the Leica Gallery Boston for an engaging talk with Photographer and Photojournalist, Sophie Park. Park will speak about her career as a freelance photojournalist and share recent work created in collaboration with New York Times reporter John Branch. The project follows Dr. Sue Goldie, a Harvard professor, physician, and public health scientist living with Parkinson’s disease, who sought to give voice to a struggle often endured in silence.
Park’s photographs document Goldie as she confronts the progression of her disease and immerses herself in the sport of triathlon, as exercise has been shown to help manage Parkinson’s symptoms. In the published story, Park’s images and Branch’s reporting are interwoven with intimate video diaries recorded by Goldie herself.
Park will be joined in person by Goldie to reflect on their year-and-a-half collaboration, discuss the process of building trust, and explore the complex dynamics of photographing and being photographed.
Sophie Park is a freelance photojournalist who covers social, political, and environmental issues in New England. Her work is informed by her upbringing as third-culture-kid, which cultivated an interest in the nuances of identity and belonging.A regular contributor to the New York Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal, Park received her B.A. in international relations from Boston University and was previously a photography fellow at the Texas Tribune. She now serves on the board of the Boston Press Photographers Association, and is the co-founder of Green Street Photo Collective, a new documentary photo center in Jamaica Plain.
