About this Event
You’re invited to an evening at The Gallery at the University of Texas at Arlington, we’ll open with a performance by avd_project African Drummers, bringing West African rhythms from the region where the Gullah people originate. Following the performance, join us for an Art Talk with Sedrick Huckaby—former UTA professor and art instructor to former President George W. Bush. Sedrick received a grant to travel to Nacimiento de los Negros, Mexico, where he recently painted portraits of 101 community members, many of them direct descendants of Gullah and Seminole warriors who traveled from the Carolinas, Florida, and Indian Territory (Oklahoma) and settled in slave-free Mexico in 1852.
Experience these portraits in Latino Arts Project’s exhibition, The Gullah Journey: West Africa to Mexico. See how art and music continue to bind this community to its past and prepare them for the future.
