Join us for an Artist Talk with the artist behind ArtRage Gallery's current exhibition, INSECRECY: New Works by Jaleel Campbell. The conversation will be moderated by CJ Goode.About The Artist
Jaleel Campbell is a Syracuse based artist whose work ranges from illustration, curating, directing, performing and doll making. His passion for creating knows no bounds. It is through these acts that community building comes to the forefront. Whether it be through illustration work that showcases the often underrepresented, video work that captures the beauty and essence of black life and culture, or dolls that aim to honor and acknowledge African traditions, there is no limit to his genius. Jaleel will continue creating work that reminds black people of their worth, even when the world becomes too heavy.
Campbell has a Master of Fine Arts degree and over twelve years of experience, and his work spans digital illustration, public art, and commercial design, with high-profile collaborations including VH1, MTV, Dexcom, Walmart, Adobe, and Ceaco Puzzles. His pieces are known for their vibrant storytelling and commitment to fostering healing and joy within black communities.
About The Series
Through bold, intimate visuals, I confront the toll of secrecy, isolation, and shame, revealing the weight that LGBTQ+ individuals carry into adulthood. This body of work offers a space to unearth stories of vulnerability, joy, and survival. By shedding light on these hidden narratives, I aim to create a sense of community for those who continue to live with the consequences of societal rejection. This work is about healing. It is about breaking the cycle of secrecy, reclaiming our voices, and encouraging others to do the same.
This project was made possible in part by: ArtRage,Project OutLoud, The Near West Side Initiative, Black Artist Collective, CNY Arts, Breadcrumb Productions, and the Community Foundation.
