Dom Marker (b. 1990, Kharkiv) is a self-taught Ukrainian-American artist based between New York and Kyiv. Marker emigrated to New York when he was three years old in the midst of the USSR collapse. This early life experience, and the long-term fallout of the geopolitical on the personal, informs his work to the present day.
Marker returned to Ukraine at the onset of the full-scale invasion in 2022 to volunteer on humanitarian missions in frontline regions, and began an ongoing project focused on Ukrainian heritage and resistance. His emergent artistic practice is embedded in community activism, analog processes, and archival material, focused on themes of belonging, transience, and the hauntological effect of images on cultural memory.
Marker’s work has been exhibited in the US and Europe, and has appeared in publications such as Nothing Left but Healing (Pomegranate Press 2022), and To Hope (Nighted Life 2022). In 2024 he was selected as a Merit Scholar by the Chico Review, winner of the Charcoal Publishing Prize, and a recipient of Aperture’s Creator Labs Photo Fund grant.
