About this Event
Join us for an artist talk event where we delve into the depths of Aidan Rowlingson’s artistic journey and the narratives that inspire his latest exhibition BIG FACE.
Location: Aboriginal Art Co, 89 Grey Street, South Brisbane, 4101.
Date: Thursday 7th November, 11:00 am
Coming from a performance background, Aidan deconstructs physiognomy through a social context.
“I spend a lot of time trying to understand people. I find it difficult to read their faces, often going over situations in my head on repeat. I'm visiting this planet for the first time. I guess we all are.”
This exhibition is a collection of Aidan Rowlingson’s observations as he creates a growing library of iconography. He draws on the meditative process of repetition as he imagines storylines for people, places and culture. Through his humorous and often biting observations he paints an irreverent picture of our times.
More about the artist:
Aidan Rowlingson is a multidisciplinary artist and producer based here in Magandjin. He is a proud Butchulla man of K'gari and the Wide Bay area. After graduating from the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Acting and Performance, Aidan has worked in classical and contemporary theatre, performed original poetry as a part of a number of local events and uses visual art as vehicle to continue telling stories.
Aidan’s visual arts practice spans multiple mediums including sculpture, textile, fashion & costume, and text art. He says “I only make something when i have something to say. The medium has to fit the message”. His artwork has been displayed at a range of institutions such as the Queensland Museum, Griffith University Art Museum, & Flinders University Museum of Art. His textile work has been used to activate and decolonise event and festival spaces with First Nations Affirmations taking up space at Jungle Love Festival, Spinning WildFire, and in public window displays at VentSpace.
Aboriginal Art Co is also supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Australian Government through through Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS), with philanthropic support through Tim Fairfax Family Foundation and Creative Partnerships Australia via the Australian Cultural Fund (ACF).
