About the Artists:
-Irene Abraham
A resident of Encinitas, Irene has been working continuously as an artist since receiving an MFA in Visual Arts in 2006. Her art has been deeply affected by her background as a research scientist working in molecular and cellular biology. Irene’s works are improvisations and fantasies based on the visualizations of information and data that are primary tools in science. They are created through a combined painting and drawing process and incorporate diverse sources such as images from scientific literature, graphs, number puzzles, Braille, and maps. Among many venues, her work has been exhibited in the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, American Jewish University in Los Angeles , Riverside Art Museum, La Jolla Athenaeum, Mesa College, Oceanside Museum of Art, Waldorf College in Iowa, Grossmont College and MiraCosta College.
-Kathy Nida
Many of Nida’s drawings start as dreams or ideas in response to what she observes or hears, or because of an event or idea. During a later stage of her art career, Nida became a science teacher, starting out in biology. This constant exposure to human bodies and their parts began to assert itself into her drawings, and now is a crucial part of her work. As her teaching job changes, this new information becomes part of the toolbox of symbols and ideas that show up in her work, as do recent political issues. Her work very much is a narrative of her personal life, even as it refers to the greater human population. Issues of women’s rights, climate change, and gun control are recent focuses in some of her pieces. Most of her work is now fiber, quilts on the wall, using the traditional form of the quilt with what she learned from her printmaking days to create figurative imagery. The never-ending palette of commercial and hand-dyed fabrics brings her joy, and she also appreciates the slight three-dimensionality and tactile quality of working with fabric.
-Cindy Zimmerman
Cindy Zimmerman is a Southern California painter and placemaker with an MFA from UC San Diego Visual Arts Department and a BFA from Oklahoma University, Other professional credits include: Adjunct Emeritus at various community colleges, co-founder of a nonprofit social circus, K-12 resident artist, nonprofit founder, museum worker, and arts agency consultant. Recent retreat and residency experiences: Guapamacátaro Art & Ecology in Michoacan, Mexico; Desert Dairy in Twentynine Palms. CA.
-Stacie Birky Greene
Originally from Colorado, Stacie Birky Greene received degrees in Art and Art History from the University of Kentucky. She also studied in Florence, Italy, and at the Art Institute of Chicago. Although painting was the focus of her training, she has explored her art in a wide variety of media, including drawing, performance, photography, installation and video. The central focus of Birky Greene’s work has been to explore nature through a combination of materials and techniques. Her approach has often been guided by a fascination with form and shape, particularly as nodes for connecting unlikely allies, such as coral and cacti. By taking organic materials (or at least their representation) out of context, she compels the viewer to revel in patterns of structural unity.
