An opportunity to build community through art
"Art has the capacity to incorporate the absurd and the impossible. One of the fundamental definitions of art is its apparent uselessness, which essentially establishes a realm of freedom."
Luis Camnitzer
Disobedient Art is a multidisciplinary collective exhibition that seeks to bring together the Latino community of Louisville around art as a space for dialogue, resistance, and collective healing.
More than an exhibition, this event proposes a community gathering, where diverse artistic practices coexist in the same space: painting, photography, drawing, installation, performance, poetry, dance, music, tattoo art, and sensory experiences such as tea, coffee, and shared food.
The project will take place at Casa Latina, a space that for years has opened its doors to the Latino community of Louisville, offering cultural, social, and spiritual support.
Disobedient Art aims to strengthen that mission by creating a space where art functions as a tool for encounter, identity, and transformation.
Curatorial Concept
This is not a collective. This is not a manifesto. This is art, and it is political. It is disobedience as an act of resistance and transformation of reality.
Latin American conceptualism, since its origins, has distinguished itself from its Anglo-Saxon counterpart through its political character: distancing itself from the aesthetic dynamics of the market in order to prioritize ideas of liberation, social justice, and collective memory in hostile contexts.
Today we reclaim that tradition. Disobedient Art is a gesture of cultural activism. A space to shout identity, defend rights, and remember that every voice matters.
In times of uncertainty, being united as a community is a form of survival — and also of transformation.
This exhibition is organized by Jazz Navarro, Ana Samada, Dariana Salinas and Claudia Ricardo, four Latina women united by friendship and a deep love for art in all its forms, dreaming of creating spaces where the community can generate knowledge, exchange ideas, and find healing through artistic practices.
