Art Workshop - Contemporary Lampshade Painting - Southampton

Join us at Woodmill Art Studio for a relaxed evening of colour, pattern and design as you create and paint your own contemporary lampshade.
In this three-hour workshop, we’ll take you through the process of developing a design from scratch — so there’s absolutely no need to arrive knowing what you want to paint!
We’ll begin with a series of simple creative prompts to help you find inspiration, before exploring how everyday ideas can be transformed into bold shapes, patterns and abstract forms. You’ll experiment with composition and develop your own colour palette before bringing everything together into a final design for your lampshade.
Think bold botanical forms, playful geometrics, repeating shapes, flowing organic patterns and contemporary colour combinations — but what you create will be entirely your own.
We’ll guide you through:
- Finding inspiration using creative prompts
- Simplifying ideas into shapes and motifs
- Creating repetition, rhythm and pattern
- Choosing a limited, harmonious colour palette
- Planning a design that works around a lampshade
- Painting your finished design onto fabric
The emphasis is on exploration rather than drawing ability, so you don’t need any previous art or design experience. We’ll provide examples, inspiration and plenty of guidance throughout, while giving you the freedom to develop something that feels completely personal to you.
By the end of the evening, you’ll leave with your own hand-painted contemporary lampshade, ready to take home and display.
What’s included
All materials and equipment are provided, including your lampshade. Just bring yourself — and clothes you don’t mind getting a little paint on!
