Art Work with Tschabalala Self

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Studio Visit,’ a curatorial project by Anicka Yi and Josh Kline for Performance Space New York, the gallery is inviting students and emerging artists to join artist Tschabalala Self for an ‘Art Work’ discussion reflecting on studio visits, practical insights for emerging artists, and the importance of creative community.

'Studio Visit’ is on view at Hauser & Wirth, Wooster Street from 27 February – 11 April 2026. Please note that Art Work with Tschabalala Self will take place at Hauser & Wirth, 18th Street.

This event is free but reservations are required. Photographs may be taken at this event and used by Hauser & Wirth for its website, social media, and other marketing materials. By attending, you consent to being photographed for these purposes. The program will include a Q&A, and participants are encouraged to submit questions in advance when registering.

About the artist

Tschabalala Self (b.1990 Harlem, New York) lives and works in the Hudson Valley, New York. Self is an artist who builds a singular style from the syncretic use of painting, printmaking and sculpture to explore ideas surrounding figuration. She constructs depictions of predominantly women using a combination of sewn, printed, and painted materials, traversing different artistic and craft traditions. The formal and conceptual aspects of Self’s work seek to expand her critical inquiry into selfhood and human flourishing. Recent solo exhibitions and performances include Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2025); Longlati Foundation, Shanghai (2025); Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Finland (2024); Kunstmuseum, St. Gallen (2023); Le Consortium, Dijon (2022); Performa 2021 Biennial, New York City (2021); Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore (2021); ICA, Boston (2020); among others.

About the exhibition

‘Studio Visit’ is an exhibition in partnership with Performance Space New York—a nonprofit organization that since 1980 has served as a laboratory for cultural experimentation and artistic dissent— and Hauser & Wirth is proud to support its mission and future programming. Between 2007 and 2010, artists Anicka Yi and Josh Kline collaborated with Jon Santos to form Circular File, a brief but consequential art collective that experimented with collaborative video production, improvisation and the sociality of artistic labor. Fifteen years later, Yi and Kline reconvene to initiate ‘Studio Visit,’ a curatorial project that will also be an art installation in its own right.

Featuring work by American Artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Huma Bhabha, Cecily Brown, Nicole Eisenman, Jason Fox, Black Quantum Futurism, Nikita Gale, Georgia Gardner Gray, Jesús Hilario-Reyes, Josh Kline, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Carolyn Lazard, Guadalupe Maravilla, Paul McCarthy, New Red Order, Monira Al Qadiri, Farah Al Qasimi, Alicia Riccio, Tschabalala Self, Avery Singer, Tavares Strachan, Sung Tieu, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Anicka Yi and Ambera Wellmann, the presentation focuses on the artist’s studio in the 21st Century, posing questions about how conditions of artistic work are structured, perceived, and valued today.
