Cheyne (pronounced “Shane”) Gallarde is a queer artist who was born and raised in Hawaii. Cheyne’s art reimagines drag queens and LGBTQ icons as modern-day superheroes and villains plucked from the pages of the vintage comics he grew up with. For this new show he is bringing to Strut, Cheyne will feature heroes of LGBTQ+ people in history, icons like Sylvester, Peaches, James Baldwin, Sylvia Rivera, Sally Ride, Miss Major, and Gilbert Baker to name a few! In 2019, he won a National Advertising Award for his illustrations of LGBTQ icons for LOGOTV. In addition, he worked with Condé Nast to create the key visual and branding for their QUEEROES Awards show and with VH1 to create comic covers celebrating queer icon John Waters. In 2020, Cheyne won a National Advertising Award for his art for MTV’s 2019 Video Music Awards and was a contributing artist in the 2020 Pow!Wow! Festival. In addition, his cover art for Penguin Books’ queer-centric “Legendary Children” was released to much praise.
