Join Jihan Hersi for a hands-on workshop exploring sustainable Somali fashion through heritage, creativity, and design.Inspired by our Making Home: Art in Motion theme, the session introduces eco-friendly materials, including upcycled fabrics and plant-based dyes, alongside simple pattern-making and stitching techniques rooted in Somali clothing traditions. Participants will experiment with sustainable textile methods and create a small accessory or patch using reclaimed fabric off-cuts.Blending a short talk with interactive activities, the workshop encourages creative thinking around fashion, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
Jihan Hersi is a Somali fashion designer whose work explores cultural storytelling and diasporic identity through contemporary fashion. Inspired by Somali heritage, her designs combine modern silhouettes with traditional influences, using clothing as a way to preserve culture and express identity. Jihan has worked for a brand featured at London Fashion Week and has been a long-time volunteer with Kayd Arts, supporting creative projects that celebrate Somali art and community. Through her practice, she aims to create meaningful work that connects fashion, heritage, and representation while encouraging conversations around culture, memory, and belonging within the diaspora.
