About this Event

Celebrated historian Nick Ross (Director, Art History Abroad) will treat us to a lecture on 'The Art of Power: From Genghis Khan to the Age of Democracy’ at the Turf Club, London on 21st April.

The evening will start at 6pm with drinks and canapes, followed by the lecture and any questions you may wish to ask.

The evening will end at 8pm.

A further description of what Nick will be presenting to us:

How has power been projected, legitimised, and remembered across history? I n this richly illustrated and highly engaging lecture, Nick Ross—Director of Art History Abroad—takes us on a sweeping journey from the raw authority of Genghis Khan, through the storytelling of the Bayeux Tapestry, Renaissance genius, the rise of diplomacy, and the splendour of early modern courts, to the visual language of power we still recognise today. Renowned for his infectious enthusiasm and exceptional gift for making art history vivid and accessible, Nick brings together politics, culture, and human ambition in a talk that promises to be as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. An evening to be inspired, surprised, and enlightened.

Biographical note

Nicholas Ross has enjoyed an unconventional life. As a teenager he imagined a future in the Royal Navy, shaped by a love of sport and physical challenge. At sixteen, however, a rugby accident left him paralysed with a broken neck. Thanks to the care of Stoke Mandeville Spinal Injuries Centre—and as much to good fortune—he regained the ability to walk and turned his energies towards a more cerebral path.

For over forty years, Nick has run Art History Abroad, providing cultural courses in Italy for gap-year students, as well as tours for parents and friends to destinations across Europe, India, and Japan. He has written books on Canaletto and Florence, but would describe himself, above all, as a speaker—sharing ideas, art, and experience with live audiences.
