Centuries before Rembrandt and Vermeer defined the Dutch Golden Age of painting, the so-called “Flemish Primitives” discovered the power of oil paint to synthesize luminous, jewel-toned illusions of reality on flat surfaces. In the early 15th century, the artists of Flanders retained the traditional Christian iconography of the Middle Ages, but brought a new earthiness, and a shocking level of naturalism, to the genre. Get to know the circle of Robert Campin and his most famous student, Rogier van der Weyden, who produced some of the most beautiful and profound works of the era, with art historian Brenda Edgar.Join us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series, held the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar, in collaboration with The Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center.
