Art Genesis: The Beginning of Legacy

Art Genesis: The Beginning of Legacy presents its second annual summer exhibition. The exhibition will show original works from 12 global artists. These emerging artists hail from countries such as Canada, Congo, Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria, and the U.S.

For this installation, Mashonda not only sought to bring together a diverse group of emerging artists, but she sought artists that employed various media to express their personal beliefs, needs, and visions.

Chantel Walkes, a self-taught artist from Canada crafted her original works using beads, fabric, foil, photography, rhinestones, and sequins, for example. While Lord Ohene, a Ghanaian portraiture and figurative artist whose works reference expressionism, uses acrylic, Mouso black, and oil pastels to tell stories of African journeys, memories, routs, and migration.

Megan Lewis’s portraits create for her a world where she can play, work out, and express her emotions. For this esteemed Baltimore muralist who has created commissioned works for Doritos, HBO Max, and the U.S. Open, Megan feels an obligation to untangle her imagination from Americanized history books and standards.

To create an immersive experience for the artists and attendees, Art Genesis: The Beginning of Legacy will be at 3118 W. Sunset Blvd., a studio space in Silver Lake. This historic yet vibrant community is known for its decadent art scene.

The exhibit opens to the public on August 12, 2022, at 1 PM, and closes on August 18, 2022, at 6 PM. With free admission, all are welcome to support this outstanding lineup of emerging artists that include Chantel Walkes, Dana Marie Bullock, Johnson Ocheja, K’era Morgan, Joshua Griffin (p.k.a Zim), Lauren Pearce, Lord Ohene, Megan Lewis, Ronnie Rob, Sisqo Ndombe Akisieful, Unyime Edet, Zwelethu Machepha.

ABOUT MASHONDA TIFRERE AND ArtLeadHer:

When she founded Art LeadHer in 2016, Mashonda Tifrere’s mission was simple: to provide equitable opportunities for emerging women in visual arts. Since then, she has shown over 200 artists globally in legacy cities and spaces reputed for their rich art scenes, including Lawrence Alkin Gallery in London, England, Pulse Miami, and more recently, during BET’s House of BET program held during the 2022 BET Awards season.

Mashonda is a New York/Los Angeles-based independent curator who is the Founder of ArtLeadHer, a platform dedicated to empowering women in art. She obtained an Art Business degree from Christie's Education in New York. Art Genesis is an artist service organization dedicated to building a sustainable marketplace for emerging and established entrepreneurial artists. As pioneers in advocacy and professional development, it capitalizes on the intersection of art and enterprise by activating collaborative partnerships and developing innovative resources.

Through Art Genesis, Mashonda weaves together different artists, inspirations, and styles to create a unified experience that elevates artistic careers. This exhibition is the second of its kind and is a part of an ongoing curatorial program. As the title of the show suggests, it is just the tip of the iceberg - the first of many shows and initiatives whose common goal is to amplify the voices of emerging artists.
