A little about the artist:
"Rachael Hunter is a painter based in Madison, Wisconsin. She takes art classes at UW Madison and has taken to painting in the last few years. Growing up in Minnesota as an only child, she spent much of her time alone either playing outside or making up
stories in her childhood home. This solitude nurtured her imagination, a thread that continues to run through her work.
Her art captures feelings and atmospheres through expressive, intuitive painting, blending vibrant, surreal scenes with intense colors like blues and reds. Rachael’s focus is on creating ambiguous, unsettling narratives that invite viewers to interpret the for themselves. Many of her works are unsettling due to a sense of unresolved tension or elements that don’t fit reality. She works primarily with oil, acrylic, and flashe paints, letting the process unfold naturally and pursuing whatever feels exciting.
A key influence in Rachael’s artistic journey is the legacy of the magical realists who studied at UW–Madison, such as Sylvia Fein and John Wilde. Fein’s surrealist approach to capturing everyday fantastical elements and Wilde’s intricate, dreamlike imagery resonate deeply with Rachael’s own exploration of ambiguity and emotion. Like these artists, Rachael uses her paintings to bridge the gap between reality and imagination, her Midwest roots to contemporary storytelling through art.
Rachael’s inspiration often comes from her surroundings— including the stories and dreams of her friends or the oddities of everyday life. She uses vibrant colors to evoke emotion and create contrast. Collaboration also plays a vital part in her process, as she thrives on the exchange of ideas and energy sharing ideas with others. Her pieces reflect the people, places, and stories that populate her life she encounters, transformed into bold, dynamic compositions that aim to bring more art and color into the world."
