May 19, 2021 Session at 1:30 pm, Program number 30397-10
In this session, we will explore natural and botanical themes from the High’s Decorative Arts Collection. Looking at works of art ranging from the seventeenth to the twentieth century, we will examine how artists employ botanical imagery, patterns, and motifs across time periods and cultures.
June 16, 2021 Session at 1:30 pm, Program number 40397-01
This session will explore the idea of place – both real and imagined. We will look at artists such as Nellie Mae Rowe, who calls on her memories to depict places from her childhood, and Radcliffe Bailey, whose mixed-media environments explore themes of ancestry, race, migration and memory. We will discuss the importance of our own spaces and how these artists chose to capture moments in time and places from their own personal histories.
July 21, 2021 Session at 1:30 pm, Program number 40397-02
Learn about the new exhibition Calder – Picasso during this art conversation. Conceived by the artists’ grandsons, Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and Alexander S. C. Rower, this exhibition focuses on the artists’ exploration of the void, or absence of space, which both artists defined through the figure and abstraction. This session will examine a variety of works and techniques of both Calder and Picasso with an emphasis on their figural representations.
August 18 , 2021 Session at 1:30 pm, Program number 40397-03
This art conversation will center on classical mythology and examine the ways in which these fantastical stories inspired artists spanning from the 1600s to the 2000s. From historical Dutch landscape painting to contemporary sculpture, we will discuss the ways in which artists pulled from classical lore and how these depictions and their meanings have changed over time.
