A reception for the "Art and Activism of Jean Birkenstein Washington," on display through June, will be held Sunday, May 24, 2-4 p.m.A guided description of the works, dating from the 1940s to the early 2000s, will be given by the artist’s son, longtime Duluth journalist Robin Washington, and Amy Varsek, former curator of the Duluth Art Institute.
The art exhibit is one of several events in Minnesota and Illinois celebrating the Centennial in 2026 of the late Chicago artist, educator and activist who played a consequential role in that city's Civil Rights Movement, opening her home to organizers challenging school segregation, housing discrimination and other injustices. Her artwork reflected that same commitment, centering the dignity and humanity of the people and communities she portrayed.
