Art After Work: Crocheted Tapestries with Lordes Guerrero at UIMA

Join Intuit at The Ukranian Institute of Modern Art for a crocheted tapestry workshop facilitated by Lourdes Guerrero, a featured artist in UIMA’s current exhibition, “Agency: Craft in Chicago from the 1970s-80s and Beyond”.

Workshop Description 

Artist Lourdes S. Guerrero will introduce the foundations of crochet and guide participants through stitching their own granny squares. More experienced crocheters will explore techniques for making a tapestry or crocheted bag using nylon rope. 

Materials Provided at UIMA 

• Acrylic and nylon yarns  

• Crochet hooks of various sizes 

• Yarn needles 

Participants Should Bring 

• A Notebook 

• Any personal yarn, crochet hooks, yarn needles or scissors they’d care to use

Meet Lourdes Guerrero

Lourdes S. Guerrero has been crocheting since she was seven years old. Inspired by her grandmother, crochet is her primary fiber medium. She is also a painter, travel photographer, storyteller; and instructor.

She has a BFA in Art Education and MA in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Illinois-Chicago. She taught high school art for ten years in the Chicago Public Schools and two years in the Art Education Program at the School of the Art Institute Chicago.

Lourdes’ artwork has been collected in Ireland, Germany and the Midwest. She’s currently a board member of the Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art and continues to teach and do storytelling. She’s also discovered that her new studio space has been a wonderful place to create new work and explore the joy of teaching herself to weave.
