Around The Lake Festival: Crossings by Luke Jerram

Around The Lake Festival is a FREE festival for Crawley residents at Tilgate Park, produced by Creative Playground.

Crossings is a new installation artwork by world renowned artist Luke Jerram in collaboration with BBC Radio4 producer Julian May, which was commissioned by Compton Verney for its first presentation during summer 2022.

It is presented in Crawley as part of Around The Lake Festival from Saturday 13 July until Wednesday 17 July at various times.

The installation will take place on Tilgate Lake.

About the installation

The installation consists of 9 rowing boats on the water. Each of the boats plays audio of stories from around the world.

In choosing a story and rowing out into the water for 30 minutes participants are taken on an audio journey, transported to another life and circumstance. The action of rowing and the live sounds this action creates, blends with the recorded audio, to help create a truly engaging and immersive experience.

The boats are decorated with imagery relating to the stories.

Duration: The installation is 30 minutes. Plus, 15 minutes for arrival and departure. We recommend anticipating you'll be at Crossings for 45 minutes-1 hour.

Age Recommendation: Age 5+

How To Book

Booking is not essential, but we'd recommend it so that you can attend at the time you'd like. You are welcome to turn up to the festival and queue.

If you can no longer attend, please cancel your tickets and email us. This is so that we can ensure someone else can attend instead.

Your Experience

• Please arrive on time for your timeslot. This is important so that the Stewards can share instructions, health and safety information and get you onto the boat in time to enjoy the installation.
• Please wear suitable shoes and clothing that you don't mind getting wet. We don't anticipate you getting wet, but it is best to be prepared.
• Lifejackets will be provided, free of charge. We recommend wearing one. Children under 16 must wear a life jacket.
