About this Event
We are delighted to present a unique Around the World Dance Crossover showcasing the work of international dance artists based in Scotland.
Emanuel Carlos vs Bandile Makhathini
Urban dancers Emanuel Carlos and Bandile Makhathini will share a stage fusing Afro House and Sbujwa in an unmissable dance-off of beats, rhythms and techniques. A new commissioned collaborative work will premiere at the 2022 Edinburgh Multicultural Festival.
Scene Africa by African Connections CIC (Scotland) and Isintu Setso Cultural Exchange (South Africa)
Scene Africa celebrates South African contributions to world culture by bringing music and dance that elevates, empowers and resists injustices. Short sketch stories intertwined with original music, dance routines and physical theatre.
The ultimate South African fusion that interweaves joyous and turbulent past and present will take you on a journey through the scenic Cape Town and Durban, to fast-paced Johannesburg all the way to the deep Sowetan township.
Ticking Clock by Theiya Arts
Theiya Arts will grace the stage with the new production of Ticking Clock that explores our relationship to nature from the perspective of South Asian Art and the emergency of climate change. Inspired by the Climate Clock installation in Times Square, New York, this piece is not an attempt to answer the complex question of how to solve the climate crisis, it does not impart judgment on human behaviour or pretend to come to conclusions on the reasons behind the current crisis. Instead, it is an effort to contribute to the ongoing conversation on climate change and Climate Action from an artistic perspective. The performers will take the audience through their own introspective journey as they explore how their dance traditions have always embodied elements of the natural world, what their movement archives allow them to express and explore, and where it may lack in juxtaposition to the expression and embodiment of present-day issues.
This production has been developed by the Theiya Arts Dance Collective; an ensemble of Edinburgh based artists dedicated to South Asian dance forms. With the support of National Theatre Scotland through their ‘Discover’ programme of residencies and The Work Room (Glasgow), the artists have been able to submerge on an explorative journey that has inevitably taken them out of the comfort zones of their dance styles and traditional repertoire in search of new ways to connect to the audience and making the classical and traditional elements of the dance forms more accessible to everyone.
