Community members (18 yrs and older) are invited to help members of our USCG North Bend Sector, AMVETS Post 10 Coos Bay, Oregon South Coast Patriot Guard Riders, SOVO, and others from our local Veteran Support Community to paint the Arago Radar Station (military bunkers) at 1000 Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20th 2023. A waiver for the State Parks Department will need to be signed to participate when you arrive. State Park employees will be on site assisting and providing all equipment & materials needed for this project.
**We are needing to purchase paint for this project.**
The process began in Spring 2020 to be able to place an interpretive board and additional signage at this site to help educate and encourage visitors to be respectful of this historical place. per the main office in Salem, the original goal to have it done by Memorial Day 2022 did not happen and they have now stated it will be a much longer process. They said it will take several thousand dollars for this project. We have also asked for a gate at the end of the entry road and other additional security measures for this site.
Having it put on a National Historic registry may be able to help with maintaining and with deterring vandalism. Major fines and/or jail time could be in store for those who are performing these types of criminal acts.
Designated parking along main road before the trail and just passed it. If needed, you can carpool after parking in Shore Acres State Park. The rocky trail is about 1/4 mile uphill and may be difficult at this time for persons with physical limitations. ADA access to trails like this one and others is something I advocate for and hope to help with in the future.
