The Arizona Winds kicks off its 2022-2023 concert season with “Fiesta”
The Arizona Winds will return to the West Valley for a new season of five exciting community concerts beginning Sunday, October 9th. The concert, entitled “Fiesta”, is inspired by the many styles of Latin music from the Americas, Spain, Cuba, and Portugal, and will feature local trumpet phenom Dan Reed, who, among other features, will be performing Chuck Mangione’s Children of Sanchez. Dan literally lights up the stage with his passion for trumpet performance and unique entertainment style. His personality and showmanship are simply infectious, and easily live up to his professional mantra, “keeping it fun”.
His talent was noted as “exceptional” from an early age with invitations to perform at Preservation Hall in New Orleans ,the Admiral River Boat in St. Louis, the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA, and the William & Mary Shakespearean Festival to name just a few. After graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Music Performance, Dan heard the call of the ocean and joined Carnival Cruise Lines’ show band staff. After two years, he was asked to serve as musical director for Princess Cruise Lines where he spent the next 18 years of his professional music career. Dan moved to Phoenix in 2011 and has been very busy ever since performing as the featured musician with many bands, conducting and coaching bands, and forming and performing in numerous groups throughout Arizona doing what he does best, ”keeping it fun.”
Other music featured on the program includes a number of Spanish, Cuban and Mexican-inspired works depicting Latin street carnivals, fiestas and dances: Portraits of Spain; two pieces by John Philip Sousa entitle Cubaland, Under the Spanish and Cuban Flags; the ever-popular Spanish songs Granada and Malaguena; the third movement (Carnival) from H. Owen Reed’s La Fiesta Mexicana, and more.
