Join us for the fifth edition of the Arion Press Artist Talks bringing artists and writers into public dialogue.
Acclaimed artist William Kentridge will appear in conversation with award-winning historian Adam Hochschild. Join us on Saturday, March 11 for a stimulating conversation about history, art, and the social imagination moderaterd by Natasha Becker.

Adam Hochschild writes frequently about issues of human rights and social justice. The latest of his eleven books is American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy’s Forgotten Crisis. King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, as was To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918. His book Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire’s Slaves was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the PEN USA Literary Award. Adam has also written for the New Yorker, the Atlantic, The Nation, and many other magazines, and teaches at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism.
William Kentridge is an artist born in Johannesburg who works across mediums of drawing, writing, film, performance, music, and theatre to create works of art that are grounded in politics, literature, and history, while always maintaining a space for contradiction and uncertainty. His work can be found in the collections of art museums and institutions across the globe. Kentridge has directed operas for the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the English National Opera, the Sydney Opera House, and the Salzburg Festival. His original works for stage combine performance, projections, and shadow play and include The Refusal of Time, The Head & the Load, and Waiting for the Sibyl. Kentridge is the recipient of honorary doctorates from several universities including Yale, Columbia and the University of London. His prizes include the Kyoto Prize (2010), the Princesa de Asturias Award (2017) and the Praemium Imperiale Prize (2019).
