Hawaiian Historical Society (HHS) along with Hawaiian Mission Houses (HMH) will host a collaborative event on Friday, October 11, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm in person at our shared campus. Archives Uncorked: We did what? When? will feature curated exhibits from both organizations highlighting quirky and peculiar firsts that will entice even the most avid trivia extraordinaire. Ticket includes: a four-station tour, one drink, one personal charcuterie box, and one custom swag bag. Additional beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are $65 for members and $75 for nonmembers per person and are available at www.missionhouses.org. Gates open at 5:00pm.
October’s theme explores some of the first appearances on the islands from tooth extractors and sewing machines to counterfeit money and a train robbery. Guests will be treated to four special-access experiences. First, take a pull on the printing press and learn about the first publications in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. Next, view early medical instruments in one of the original mission houses, while discovering Hawaiʻi's first surgeries and treatments in Western medicine. In the Library Reading Room, interact with rare archival material and immerse yourself with the first written accounts of meteorological phenomena. Finally, explore the firsts of wine with a special tasting. This month we welcome guest sommelier, and librarian, Krystal Kakimoto from Bishop Museum. Join us for Archives Uncorked: We did what? When? for a night of firsts and experience the exclusive opportunity to tour the collections of two historically renowned organizations in one location. Come sip, snack, and learn about Hawaiʻi’s history.

###
Established in 1892, The Hawaiian Historical Society (HHS) is a non-profit, membership-based organization, library and archives. Queen Liliʻuokalani was the first royal patroness of HHS, which was founded during her reign. Our mission for over 132 years is to preserve, perpetuate, and encourage the study of the history of Hawaiʻi. HHS publishes books in English and Hawaiian, and The Hawaiian Journal of History. The library and archives, located on the grounds of Hawaiian Mission Houses, contains an outstanding collection of published works, manuscripts, photographs, visual works on canvas and paper, and historical objects; which represents a powerful breadth of material from the 1810s to present made available to scholars and the public. If you would like to support the important work we do by becoming a member or making a contribution, please visit our website.
###
Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site and Archives (HMH), an active site for Hawaii’s history since 1820, is a National Historic Landmark (listed in 1965) and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. HMH graces a one-acre site in the Historic Capital district in downtown Honolulu. HMH preserves Hawai‘i’s oldest Western-style house, the 1821 Mission House, as well as the 1831 Chamberlain House, the 1841 Bedroom Annex, a cemetery, a collections storage vault, a gift shop, and multi-purpose space. The library, which holds both English and Hawaiian archival material, welcomes researchers on-site as well as from around the globe on-site and through the digital collection. A coral-and-grass performance arena was added in 2011, hosting theater and mele (music) performances throughout the year, and a reconstructed hale pili, built using cultural practitioner leadership and designed with sources from journals in the HMH archives, was added in 2021. HMH offers school field trips, tours, and historical theater performances and has been awarded over 15 Po‘okela Awards for Excellence in theatrical performance, writing, and direction. The HMH historical archive holds over 80,000 digital pieces and is home to one of the largest collections of Hawaiian language books in the world.
