Announcing a special edition of Architecture on the Move!
Join the Iowa Architectural Foundation for a special edition of Architecture on the Move featuring an exclusive opportunity to explore one of Des Moines’ most significant examples of mid-century modern architecture: the former American Republic Insurance Company headquarters, designed by renowned architect Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).
Completed in 1965, the building, now home to Wellabe, is an architectural landmark known for its bold structural expression, minimalist design, and innovative approach to the modern office. Bunshaft’s design suspends the building’s upper office floors above a landscaped courtyard, creating a dramatic floating form while allowing for expansive, column-free office space. The building was recognized with an AIA Honor Award when it was completed and again following its sensitive restoration decades later.
This special Friday evening tour will follow a modified version of our North Route, with additional time devoted to exploring the Bunshaft building. Participants will have special access to the building’s interior and an opportunity to experience its architecture up close while learning more about its design, history, and restoration.

Architecture on the Move is presented by the Iowa Architectural Foundation, connecting people with the architecture and design of our communities through guided tours and experiences.
Sign-in starts at 5:00 PM in the atrium of Capital Square. Tours take off promptly at 5:30 PM. Comfortable shoes and clothing are suggested.
