Artist Carl Longmate will be delivering a fantastic urban and architecture based workshop using oil paints
About this Event
Workshop Details

In this workshop, you will learn how to use oils to create a landscape painting focusing on the hard and soft surfaces that come together to depict a man-made structure in an urban environment. Our accomplished artist Carl Longmate will give an introduction to the materials, brushes and paint that he uses. He will show you his process of focusing on layout, composition, blocking colour and light direction with his painting.

You will start the process of creating your own painting by first looking at the layout and creating the underpainting, you will then break for lunch to allow the underpainting time to dry.

After lunch Carl will give a quick demo on mixing colour and blocking in colour, you will then begin work on your earlier underpainting as per the demonstration followed by finishing and detailing. At the end of the workshop, you'll get a chance to view each other's work and Carl will be able to answer any questions that you have.

About the artist

Carl was born in Manchester in 1957 and had always been interested in art so art college was a certainty.

After four years of fun, he started his career with a Manchester advertising agency. His job was: "finished artist", cow gum, Letraset and making the tea!

He eventually tried his hand at self-employment - designing and manufacturing his own shop mannequins! He won a best young business award from the DTI (Department of Trade and Industry)

In his own words " I've had a colourful life!" and he has worked for some amazing companies including international design company Vitra in Switzerland and Steelcase in America.

Now a full-time plein-air painter, using oils as his preferred medium, Carl says painting outside has always worked for him. He likes the immediate results, and describes it as a very honest way of painting as he stated that he hates the verbose nonsense associated with art, and would rather do it than talk about it!
