An illustrated lecture on Adam Loftus (1533-1605), Archbishop of Dublin, Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Provost of Trinity College Dublin
About this Event

From relatively humble origins in Yorkshire, Adam Loftus rose to become one of the most important ‘New English’ politicians and Protestant clergymen in sixteenth-century Ireland. He was a key figure in Queen Elizabeth’s Dublin administration and in the new established church. His positions included that of Archbishop of Dublin, Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Provost of Trinity College Dublin and Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He commissioned Rathfarnham Castle as a private residence for himself and his family in 1583. This talk will provide an overview of his background and career and discuss some of the sources available to us in studying the early history of life at the Castle.

Eoin O'Flynn is the Head Guide at Rathfarnham Castle and has worked there for ten years. He has worked at various OPW-managed sites in Meath and Dublin over the past twenty years.

Doors open at 3pm and the talk runs from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Tickets are €5 including booking fee.
